The tortoise and the hare in job seeking

Are you submitting lots of applications but not getting many interviews?

You might be a job-seeking hare.

Most of us know Aesop's Fable about the tortoise and the hare. But are there any lessons here for job seekers?

There are.

For many people, applying for jobs is a numbers game – the more applications you submit, the more likely you'll get a job.

They produce a standard CV and then use it for every application.

The emphasis is on speed—running fast.

Their application will be one of the first the recruiter receives.

Once they submit it, they'll quickly move on to the next opportunity. And the next. And the next.

These people are the hares of the job market.

You might recognise them. They're the ones who submit 100s of applications but rarely get an interview.

Then there are the tortoises.

They're far more considered.

They're clear about the job they want.

They work out where to look for job opportunities they're most interested in and qualified to do.

When they find these opportunities, they take the time to understand what the recruiter is looking for and then tailor their CV and cover letter to match the role's requirements.

But wait, do they press the submit button? No, let's not rush things.

The tortoises would only submit their application after thoroughly checking it to ensure they hadn't missed anything.

Some even get someone else—like a friend, colleague, or coach—to review their application before they're ready to submit it.

The tortoises go for quality over quantity every time.

The hares go for speed.

So, who wins the race?

Like in the fable, the tortoises are usually the winners. They're more likely to secure their ideal role.

The hare will eventually get there, but it will take them longer, and they may have to settle for a different role than the one they wanted.

The quality of your application matters in the job market.
